Protesters Take to Lake Geneva in Flotilla Demonstration Against G7
The flotilla assembled at the centre of the lake, positioning itself directly opposite Evian, where leaders of the Group of Seven nations had gathered for their annual weekend summit.
According to a statement from Global Sumud Switzerland, which backed the action, participants sought to shine a spotlight on Switzerland's stance toward Gaza and its involvement in the security architecture surrounding the high-profile summit.
Organisers were clear that the demonstration was conducted on strictly non-violent terms throughout.
Several of those who took part have a history of direct action in the region, having previously joined flotilla missions that attempted to reach Gaza by sea.
"The countries of the G7 and Switzerland are complicit in the genocide taking place in Gaza," said Swiss Green Party lawmaker Leonore Porchet, who was among the participants in the flotilla protest.
Former Geneva Mayor Remy Pagani, who was previously detained by Israeli authorities during an earlier Gaza-bound flotilla mission, also joined Saturday's demonstration on the lake.
