Survey Shows Swiss Public Distrusts Major Tech Giants
The study, published Tuesday by Bern-based research institute gfs.bern, revealed that nine in ten respondents believe big tech operates primarily in pursuit of financial gain, while 94% called for stronger protections for children and young people across social media platforms.
Anxieties over political sway and strategic dependency ran equally deep. Some 84% of those surveyed expressed concern over undue political influence from the home countries of these corporations, and 82% warned that Switzerland risks growing dangerously reliant on foreign technology firms — particularly those headquartered in the US and China.
Broader public sentiment toward the tech sector remained polarized. While 40% of respondents adopted a neutral stance, 38% said their overall view of big tech was negative — compared to just 21% who held a favorable opinion.
The survey's findings reached well beyond the tech industry itself, touching on wider unease over the pace of digitalization. Although 58% acknowledged that digital transformation carries overall benefits, fewer than half — 48% — felt it served society broadly, and 46% said its effects on democratic processes were somewhat or severely harmful.
Support for robust state oversight of the digital sphere was emphatic. Some 88% of respondents said governments must ensure transparency in artificial intelligence-driven decisions, while 86% insisted that human oversight remain mandatory in high-stakes scenarios.
In a notable contrast to the skepticism directed at private tech, trust in Switzerland's own institutions held firm — with 75% of respondents saying they retain confidence in Swiss public authorities.
