Switzerland Freezes Patriot Payments
The move reflects ongoing concerns about unclear scheduling and shifting priorities affecting the agreement.
"The timing of delivery to Switzerland of the Patriot long-range ground-to-air defense system remains uncertain," the department stated, emphasizing that payments would remain suspended "until the United States has firmly announced" an updated timetable. The statement underscores Switzerland’s insistence on clarity before resuming financial commitments.
Officials also indicated that this stance was formally relayed to the Swiss Federal Council during its Wednesday session. The communication highlights the government’s alignment on maintaining caution regarding the defense procurement process.
According to the department, the United States has signaled that shipments of the long-range ground-to-air system will face delays due to a strategic focus on supporting Ukraine.
Switzerland noted that this reprioritization has "profoundly modified the contractual basis" of the deal, creating uncertainty around delivery schedules, payment structures, and broader financial consequences.
Bern had already stopped its payments last autumn to a US-administered deposit account under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, which funds several defense acquisitions. The Defense Department explained that American authorities utilize this account for various procurements, including the F-35A fighter jet and spare components for the F/A-18 aircraft.
In recent months, funds originally designated by Switzerland for the F-35A have been redirected by the US to cover Patriot-related expenses, while Washington has simultaneously sought additional financial input into the account, the department added.
